Disillusioned with Manhattan rent prices, director of operations Bruce Levin
took his business across the river to New Jersey, opening Hudson River
Studios four years ago. The company owns four buildings, each gleaming
studio with its own style. Firehouse West has cyc and 12,000 square feet
(SF) of dividable ground-level space. Firehouse East is 6,000 SF with drive-in capabilities, plus 10,000 SF rooftop access. For more intimate settings,
The Loft provides full natural light, wood floors and exposed brick walls;
for food shoots, Orange Door o;ers fully equipped commercial kitchen
and a green room. For unobstructed shooting, Houdini delivers a column-free studio with daylight exposures. Clients can also shoot in or stay at
The Cottage, a single-family home with private deck and backyard. “Our
philosophy is to work with creative people and build relationships,” Levin
says. Based on the premise “build it and they will come,” Hudson River
Studios is working its magic.

When photographer-engineer Eckhard Heine bought a faulty flash unit from
equipment retailer Conny Dufgran, Eckhard invented a new type of flash
and returned to show Conny his superior product. A few years later, the duo
exhibited the first Pro- 1 generator at the Photokina show in Cologne, and
Profoto was born. O;cially founded in Stockholm in 1968, today Profoto
products are used by the best in the business. Whether on billboards or in
fashion magazines, chances are good that the images were created with the
help of Profoto lights. Continuously refining and improving their equipment,
the company remains true to the ideals of its founders, with the belief that a
light-shaping tool should feel right, sound right and be aesthetically pleasing.
At Profoto, technology doesn’t rule the artist but provides solutions, allowing
photographers to shape the light to fit the look of any project. With more than
120 tools to choose from, Profoto helps turn creative vision into reality.

photo and television, operating in Jersey City since 2006. “We saw the
need for large, ground-floor, drive-in stages close to Manhattan, but
outside the city,” says Adam Himber, executive producer and director
of business development for Parlay. Accommodating everything from
daylight fashion and editorial to full seasons of scripted and unscripted
TV series, a great variety of projects are shot here by some of the best
photographers and directors in the business. Clients come for the
combination of features, including big, beautiful stages with plenty of
daylight and flex space, 24/7 indoor loading dock and on-site catering.
Parlay carries and sources the latest lighting and grip equipment, as
well as o;ering expendable and production supplies and location
rentals. “Once you arrive,” Himber says, “we pretty much have everything
