What does it take to thrive in the photography
industry today? CEO and co-founder of
CreativeLive and photographer Chase Jarvis
finds many shooters underestimate the
“People believe it starts and ends with the
craft, but the craft is the get-in-the-door part,
not where it ends,” he says. “You have to be
good at so many things, and being good at
photography is just one of those things.”
The San Francisco-based shooter is likely
to discuss many of the other crucial factors for
success during the conversational keynote
he will have at PhotoPlus Expo with Gary
Vaynerchuk, co-founder of the digital agency
VaynerMedia. Bring your questions, as they
will address some during the keynote.
Jarvis says one important asset to have, for
instance, is distinction: “Di;erentiating is the
name of the game, and how you’d be di;erent,
not just better,” he says. And what he calls “soft
skills,”—such as being amiable and open with
people—are now musts.
Another requisite: business acumen. “The
belief that you don’t have to advocate for
yourself, that there’s someone out there who
can advocate for you to the same degree that
you would yourself, is fiction,” he says.
Jarvis has a warning for photographers who
think they’re too busy to hone new skills: “The
market doesn’t care,” he says, “and you’re
competing against people who find a way.”
