Roberto Ricci D’Andonno
An ongoing personal project that features portraits of refugees who have arrived
in Italy from countries plagued by war and poverty and are awaiting asylum.
While history honors famous journeyers, D’Andonno says, these refugees embark
on dangerous travels not for glory but for freedom. D’Andonno photographs
them as historical figures, inspired by classic paintings and photographs.
“Bei Mir Bistu Shein” portrays an Orthodox Jewish family represented
in three different parts of the world: United States, England and Israel.
The subjects exist in a liminal space between history and modernity.
This dichotomy captures the essence of the subjects—people who define
their lives by an idea that embodies the physical and the mystical world
perhaps more than any other: faith.
