Filmmaker and educator Steve Stockman once said, “Great video comes
from thinking humans, not equipment.” While that may be true, intelligent
equipment can be critical to developing high-quality projects. For NX1
filmmakers, their equipment has plenty of smarts, if they know where to
look. Here’s how to get the best 4K video possible from yours.
flagship camera, the NX1.
If you were an NX1 early adopter,
scooping up the camera right
when it hit the market, the first
thing you’ll absolutely want to do
is update the camera’s firmware
(now on v. 1.40). In late January,
Samsung unlocked a range of
critical video features that take
the NX1’s filmmaking chops to
the next level, and subsequent
updates have delivered further
important tweaks. To update the
camera’s firmware, head to

sure to keep your
updated as well.
ON THE NX1
You’ll be capturing far more detail
with a 4K camera, so you’ll need
to pay extra attention to lighting. It’s
especially important to remember that
textures that would otherwise be lost to an
HD camera can be captured with 4K, so
lighting textured surfaces at unique angles
with hard light can enhance your scenery
and leverage all those extra pixels.
