ies at western Kentucky university on hold to shoot on contract for The New york Times.
sharrett had been an intern at The Times when editors noticed his talent. “he’s one of those kids who
could go straight to the pros,” says Times photographer doug mills, who has mentored sharrett at the paper’s
washington bureau.
sharrett has shot a variety of assignments for The Times, from the Kentucky derby to dc news to congress.
but most of his assignments are for political coverage. mills says sharrett has the talent and work ethic to

Edward MacDowell Medal
The MacDowell Colony, the non-profit artist
residency program in New Hampshire,
has named Nan Goldin as the 2012 Edward
MacDowell Medal recipient. The annual
award is for “an individual artist who has
made outstanding contribution to his/her
field.” Past winners include Robert Frank,
Edward Hopper, Joan Didion, Thornton Wilder

Mannie Garcia Files $500,000
Lawsuit for Unlawful Arrest
The veteran news photographer says his civil
rights were violated by several Montgomery
County, Maryland, police officers who
arrested him for taking pictures of them in
June 2011 as they carried out their duties in
public. A judge cleared Garcia last December
of all charges stemming from his arrest a
