A fAther’s rAw emotion is brought to life on moAb pAper.
Resilience and buoyancy are the hallmarks of
the images captured by
award-winning portrait
and fine art photogra-
pher Jim LaSala. In that vein, he photographed his
nonagenarian father, a favorite subject of LaSala’s due
to his brilliant white hair and Cary Grant good looks.
This man, the picture of resilience, was down, but not
out on the day of the shoot. “He’s been beaten up
through life, but he’s always been able to move past
it,” LaSala explains. Indeed, during his 92 years, the
elder LaSala has faced a series of hurdles including
Jim LaSaLa
hearing loss, various illnesses and the death of loved
ones including two of his own children. Each furrow,
ridge and crease in his face, a record of the setbacks
and triumphs of his life, are delicately brought out by
Moab’s Entrada Rag Bright 300 fine art paper. This
intimate portrait has received best in show honors, a
Kodak award and a Fuji Masterpiece designation at
PhotoNorthEast. “I’m so happy that it did so well. It
means so much to me,” LaSala says. The award-winning, 100 percent cotton smooth paper on which the
image is printed holds texture like none other, LaSala
says. “I find with the Moab fine art papers that blacks
transfer exceptionally well. They’re able to hold details
in the deepest shadows. I get a tremendous amount
ADVERTISING
of latitude,” he explains. The paper’s sharp color
translation also helped achieve the proper balance of
warm tones with the brilliant blue of the sweatshirt
LaSala put on his father when it got chilly outside.
“I love the juxtaposition of colors. The yellows and
blues are so opposite that they work together very
well. Printing on this paper just enhanced that, and
I got what I was looking for. I really feel close to it.”
