EXPOSURES
Garth Meyer’s large-format black-and-white photographs of primary forests do this to stunning effect. It’s only after we acknowledge that his subjects
are truly amazing that we realize we’re looking at a
rare beauty rendered increasingly scarce every minute as humans deplete the planet’s old forests.
These rapidly disappearing forests are an important and worthy subject, but Meyer, a South African,
didn’t set out to create a fine-art series that carried an
environmental advocacy message. In fact, it was his
camera that led him, somewhat by chance, to begin
documenting endangered equatorial forests in Africa
and Southeast Asia.
Meyer studied photography at Langara College, a
technical school in Vancouver, British Columbia, and
after graduating decided to purchase a large-format
camera simply because he hadn’t seen that many in
