after art school he moved
to Brooklyn, new york, and
began assisting photographers
in advertising, fashion, celebrity and music
photography. his clients include Inc., Time Out
New York, California Real Estate Magazine,
Swindle Magazine, New York, Juxtapoz,
sony Bmg, nobu and Tank Theory. his work
has been shown in Los angeles and at the
University of massachusetts Boston. he has
won this award for his project “homies.” The
portraits in the series were taken at homeboy
industries, a non-profit based in Los angeles
that “helps men and women to redirect
their lives and provide them with hope for
their futures.” “homies” has been featured
on several blogs including TIME’s LightBox,
Prison Photography, This is the what,
Conscientious and we Can shoot Too, and is
in the permanent collection at the museum of
Fine arts, houston.
The majority of the subjects photographed for
the series “Homies” have had a mug shot taken.
Adam Amengual has instead decided to show
his subjects as proud and iconic, a metaphor for
the transformation they are bringing to their own
lives through rehabilitation.
