JUDGES
Russ O’Connell has worked in editorial photography for ten years and is currently photo director of Q magazine, the UK’s biggest music magazine, where he works with some of the world’s best photographers including David Bailey, Rankin, Perou and Danny Clinch. O’Connell keeps his foot firmly in the creative side of his job, shooting reportage photography for the magazine, and commissioning and producing some of the iconic covers in the magazine’s 25-year history. He runs his own photo blog ( thedevelopmenttank.com) and outside of work he refuses to put his camera down, constantly working on personal
projects to keep his creative clock ticking.
Michelle Egiziano is the photography director for SPIN magazine. For the past
five years, she has worked with leading fashion and portrait photographers
and has transformed SPIN into an award-winning publication. Egiziano art
directs the covers and features, and guides the overall visual content of
the magazine, the iPad application, supplements and the brand. She has
garnered multiple awards from the Society of Publication Designers, American
Photography/American Illustration, Aperture, American Photo, Viewfinder
Magazine and SPD. Prior to working for SPIN, Egiziano was a photo editor at
Blender and at ELLEgirl magazine.
Samantha Xu is the associate photo editor at Guitar World, REVOLVER, and Guitar Aficionado magazines. Previously she was an assistant photo editor at Entertainment Weekly and EW.com. Her favorite concert ever is a tie be- tween Liz Phair at Hiro Ballroom and Rammstein at Madison Square Garden. She lives in New York City with her boyfriend and two kitties.
Annie Zaleski is the managing editor of Alternative Press magazine.
Her work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times,
the Village Voice and on Salon.com
OJ Williams is photo editor at The Source. He is involved with the not- for-profit organization Black Girls Rock! and helped plan their annual awards show, which aired on BET and had 2. 5 million viewers. Always on the scene at the hottest parties and fashion events, Williams attended New York Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, The Grammy Awards, The MTV VMAs, Tribeca Film Festival, The BET Awards and several other star-studded galas. Williams has worked with Kim Kardashian, Snoop
Dogg, Kimora Lee Simmons, DMC from Run DMC, Travie McCoy, Cory
Gunz, Busta Rhymes, Black Eyed Peas, Cash Money, Rick Ross and Keri
Hilson—either dressing them solo or as a part of a styling team.
Mark Wagstaff has been art director of MOJO, Europe’s most
popular music magazine, for 14 years. The role has put him in the
enviable position of working with some of the world’s most amazing
contemporary photographers. On a monthly basis, he can be found
researching anything from the Pink Floyd archive to those of The Who
or The Beatles. As a music fan, he feels very privileged to have the
opportunity to design a magazine that contains such rich source material.
